Terms of Use

Last updated: 28 September 2026

Whetstone is a free scripture memorization and Bible study app, built and run by one person. Using Whetstone means you agree to these terms.

Who provides it

Whetstone is provided by Southern Housing LLC, a single-member limited liability company. One person builds and runs it; there are no investors and no other staff. The contact address is at the bottom of this page.

What it is

Whetstone is a progressive web application available on the web and as a native app on iOS and Android. It provides scripture reading, memorization training, audio playback, personal prayer lists, and group tools for churches and study groups.

Free, and may change

Whetstone is free and will stay free. No feature currently on offer will move behind a paywall. Features may be added, changed, or removed over time, and these terms may be updated to reflect that. If anything material changes, the date at the top will be updated.

Your account

An account is optional—you do not need one to read, listen, or memorize on a single device. If you sign in, you are responsible for keeping the email address associated with your account under your control, because it is used to verify sign-in.

You must be 13 or older to create an account. Whetstone is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal information.

Acceptable use

Use Whetstone for what it is built for: reading, memorizing, praying, and building a group around those things. The following are not allowed:

  • Scraping Bible text. The licensed translations (NLT, NKJV, NIV, ESV) are provided under terms from their publishers that forbid automated bulk extraction. Scraping violates those terms and these.
  • Abusing the service. No sending spam through group tools, no probing or attacking the infrastructure, and no using the app in a way that degrades it for others.
  • Impersonation. Do not misrepresent who you are in a group, or create accounts in someone else's name.

Group content and moderation

If you are a member of a group, you are responsible for what you post there. Group content is visible to every member of that group and cannot be made private within the group. The one exception is your response to a group event — your answers, a note to the organizer, and your guests’ names are seen by the group’s administrators, not by every member (if the organizer shows who is going, members see your name).

Administrators who upload a group logo, a banner, or an event flyer must have the right to use that image.

Group administrators can delete any post in their group and can remove or block members. Anyone can report a post; reports go to the group's administrators. Members can block each other; blocking someone hides that person's posts from you, wherever they appear.

If your group has no administrator who will act on a report, write to the contact address below.

Public church pages

A church that publishes a public page is responsible for what it says and for having the right to publish it — including sermon audio, outlines, images and podcast episodes. Listing in Find a church is free and at our discretion: we review listings, may decline or remove one, and nobody can pay for placement. Public pages may not ask for money or donations. If a page breaks these terms, report it and we will review it.

Bible text licences

The Berean Standard Bible (BSB) and King James Version (KJV) are in the public domain and are included in the app for offline use without restriction. The New Living Translation (NLT), New King James Version (NKJV), New International Version (NIV), and English Standard Version (ESV) are provided under licences from their publishers. By using those translations you are also bound by the publishers' terms.

Access to the licensed translations depends on continued agreements with their publishers. If a licence ends or a publisher's terms change, that translation may be withdrawn without notice.

No warranty

Whetstone is provided as-is. It is maintained with care, but no promises are made that it will be free of errors, always available, or suited to any particular purpose. Use it as a tool, not a guarantee.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the company that provides Whetstone is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of Whetstone—including lost data, lost progress, or unavailability. The app is free and provided in good faith; that is the limit of what is offered and accepted.

Termination

You can stop using Whetstone and delete your account at any time—in the app under Settings → Account, or at whetstonebible.com/delete-account. Everything stored against your account is deleted immediately, not deactivated.

Access may be ended for violations of the acceptable-use rules above. In serious cases—abuse, impersonation, or attacks on the service—access can be terminated without warning.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change in a way that affects your rights, the date at the top will be updated and the app will note the change. Continuing to use Whetstone after that means you accept the updated terms.
